Tom Bass

I am Tom Bass. I was famous for training horses and for making a gentle bit for horses. I was born into slavery in Boone County, Missouri. I learned a lot about horses as a child. I was riding horseback alone at the age 4. Later, I moved to Mexico, Missouri andh worked with horse buyer Joseph Potts.  At age 20 I began a horse training operation. Buyers from all across America brought their horses to me for training because l never used whips, clubs, or raised my voice to my horses. I always said, “Horse are like humans.” I trained horses for lots of people, including Theodore Roosevelt and Buffalo Bill Cody. I won lots of awards in horse shows and was the first African American to ride in the American Royal Horse Show. Queen Victoria of England invited me to London to ride for her.  I made Mexico the “saddle horse capital of the world.” I died in 1934 at the age of 75. You can still buy the Bass Bit today that I invented.
