Count Basie

Hi my name is Count Basie, William James Basie. I was a famous band leader. I was born in Red Bank, New Jersey on August 21, 1904. My father was Harvey Lee Basie. My mother was Lillian Child Basie. My mother would pay 25 cents for my piano lessons. At school I would play the drums. I dropped out of junior high school. I married Catherine Morgan and had a daughter named Diane Basie. I got my nickname Count while working five years for a band. After that band leader died, I took what was left of the band and formed the first Count Basie orchestra. My jazz band worked with many famous singers like Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis, Quincy Jones, Lena Horne, and Ella Fitzgerald. I became the most famous African American bandleader in America. My band played together for over 50 years. I died in April 26 1984 in Hollywood. One day you could be a better piano player than me.
