Charlie Bird Parker

Hi my name is Charlie “Bird” Parker. I am famous for being a great saxophone player. I was born in 1920 and my parents were Charles and Addie Parker. My hometown in Missouri was Kansas City where most jazz and blues music was played. When I was twelve my parents divorced which was very tragic. I went to school at Penn Elementary and Lincoln High in Kansas City where I learned to play the saxophone. I began playing professionally at the age of 15. In 1936 on the way to play at a club I crashed. The accident had two consequences. The club owner bought me a new saxophone and the doctor gave me heroin and I got addicted to both. I cleaned up for my act for a time because of the birth of my son in 1938, but because I was unfaithful and abusive to my wife, I got kicked out of the house by my mom. At  20 years of age I headed to New York. I got a job at a restaurant jammed with musicians. Later I reconciled with Rebecca in Kansas City. I played with famous musicians like Earl Hines, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Clarke, Max Roach, Miles Davis, Curly Russell and more.  I died in 1955 at the age of 34 because of pneumonia. I won several Posthumous awards, including a Grammy lifetime achievement for contribution to American music. I got the nickname “yardbird” but shortened it to “ bird” for my obsession for chicken.
